MIL-DTL-13486 (M13486) Mil-Spec Wire & Cable
The MIL-DTL-13486 (M13486) specification covers wire that is often used in heavy duty special purpose electrical cables for low-tension circuits used in aircraft and heavy vehicles. MIL-DTL-13486 has either a single conductor or multiple conductors that can be shielded or unshielded. The United States Military frequently uses these cables in heavy ground vehicles such as tanks, trailers, trucks, and jeeps (specifically called out in the MRAP program) due to its extraordinarily durable properties.
Some of the features responsible for the popularity of MIL-DTL-13486 are:
- Resistance to abrasion and chafing
- Excellent flexibility, even at low temperatures
- Resistance to common fluids and lubricants
- Resistance to fungus
- Resistance to weather (allows use in exposed situations)
MIL-DTL-13486 wire is typically constructed with stranded tinned copper conductor, a separator over the conductor (except with 18 AWG and 20 AWG), and Hypalon* insulation.
Note: MIL-DTL-13486 replaced the MIL-C-13486 standard.
*Hypalon is a registered trademark of DuPont Performance Elastomers, a subsidiary of DuPont.
