SAE AS50861 (M5086) wire is a general purpose electrical wire that should not be used in aerospace applications because of its PVC insulation. It is suitable for use in a wide range of other electronic applications where high resistance is needed against cut-through, abrasion, chafing, and high-impact mechanical loading.
SAE AS50861 also provides excellent protection against damage from moisture, mold, fungus, and corrosive chemicals, such as solvents, fuels, hydraulic fluids, alkalis, and alcohol.
M5086/1 (unshielded) and M5086/2 (shielded) are the most common types of M5086 wire, each of which features different material of varying thickness for applications with specific temperature requirements. Both types of wire are highly rugged, and their lightweight walls are ideal for cabling in industrial or commercial applications where mass is often a critical design factor.
Note: MIL-W-5086 has been replaced by SAE AS50861.
